SUMMER ART CAMPS We are very excited to announce our third year of summer art camps at Hipbone Art Studio for teens ages 12 to 17+. Beginning mid June 2024 we will be offering week long camps with daily classes, from 9 am to 1 pm throughout the summer. Teens will have the opportunity to experience and learn a variety of artistic disciplines taught by working artists in a safe, inclusive and professional studio environment. Below is a partial list of some of our offerings, which will be updated and expanded as the summer break nears. Drawing & Design Essentials

The ability to draw has always been the single most important skill art students must acquire, Even today, in 2024 with the overwhelming prevalence of digital media, knowing the basics of traditional drawing still remains the key to a successful start. This beginning level course follows a clear step by step approach in presenting the essential principles of drawing and design. Students will be learning the importance of light and shadow, drawing accuracy, proportion, line, value, tone, negative space, perspective and the basics of composition and 2d design. Students will also learn to asses and critically judge their own work to further improve their skills, all the while analyzing and learning from the great artists throughout history. Students will be working mainly in black and white and monochrome, beginning with still life setups, and even from a live model. A great first course that can lay the foundation to all branches of the visual arts, traditional or digital.
No previous experience in drawing or art is necessary only a strong willingness to learn and work. Price includes all materials and model fees. |

This course is designed for students who wish to improve they’re figurative skills and portfolio work for college,
A typical day begins with an hour of instruction followed by 3 hours of live drawing from a nude model. starting with quick sketches and into finished work. A strong emphasis will be placed on anatomy, structure, proportion, volume and gesture. The accurate and expressive use of line and tone are also addressed to provide a focus for increasing students skill. Two instructors will be present at all times, helping to guide and answer any questions students may have. Materials will include charcoal chalk and pencils, and a variety of paper. Price includes materials and model fees. *Note: Students will be drawing from a nude adult model. Signed permission from a parent or guardian is required for this class. |

An introduction to drawing realistic portraits both from life and photographs.
Using traditional and contemporary studio methods, students will focus on capturing the ever elusive likeness, which is the essence of portraiture. A strong emphasis will be placed on understanding light and shadow, anatomy and structure of the head, and basics of composition. We will be working mostly in black and white using charcoal and pencil as our primary media but color will be introduced as the week progresses. A great fundamentals class that can be applied to traditional and digital work, for beginning and experienced students. Price includes all materials and model fees. |

This course introduces students to the art of illustration and narrative sequence. Students will develop conceptual ideas and strong drawing skills for specific visual and illustration projects. Recommended for students with interest in illustration, comics and graphic novel work. This class can be applied to a variety of mediums, including advertising, animation, comic book, editorial, and book illustration.

With 36 years in the business, Mike Cachuela has an intimate knowledge of virtually every form of animation that has graced screens worldwide, from the ecologically themed 2-D classic, FernGully, to the first computer animated film, PIXAR’s Toy Story, and on to amazing advances in CG with The Incredibles and Ratatouille. Cachuela also contributed story and design for first high-quality stop-motion films with SKELLINGTON’s Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. In 2004, he brought his experience to Portland, co-directing on LAIKA’s masterpiece, Coraline. He has taught internationally where he finds animation and film-making transcends languages and cultures. Interested in animation and film-making?
