Portrait Fundamentals:An Introduction to Drawing and Painting the Portrait.

(Enroll for series or individual classes.) $200 for series. $70 individual classes Instructor: Rodrigo Avila An introduction to drawing and painting realistic portraits from life (or from photographs) using principles of direct tonal painting. This is a four part series that builds upon each previous class. Beginning with the basic structure of the head and face, proportions, capturing a likeness, adding shadows, transitioning into painting the portrait in grisaille, the limited palette and into to full color portraits. A good primer or starter course for both absolute beginners, experienced artists and everyone in between. Principles learned in this class can be applied to nearly all mediums such as pencil , charcoal, oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel , colored pencil. and even digital painting. PORTRAIT FUNDAMENTALS SERIES SCHEDULE 1. January 19th - Basic concepts of portraiture and getting a likeness. 2. January 26th - The Portrait in Charcoal: Understanding value and shading. 3. February 2nd - The Portrait in Grisaille: Moving from Drawing into painting. 4. February 9th - The Portrait in a limited palette: The Munsell Color System. Individual Classes: 1. Basics concepts of Portraiture: A systematic approach to getting a likeness using observational and knowledge based methods. Basic anatomy and structure of the head and face, Facial features Proportions, layout, mapping and composition. 2. Portrait in Charcoal: The critical importance of light and shadow, Adding value and shading to the portrait, 3. Portrait in Grisaille: Working in grays to help transition from drawing to painting, The toned ground. Warm and cool tones. 4. Portrait in a limited color palette: Using the Munsell color system to introduce color to the portrait. Materials: All Classes: Sketchbook and pencils.
