Workshop
​Explore the versatility of oils on yupo paper to capture the expressive human form.
Instructor Brooke Walker-Knoblich will demonstrate painting from a live model in
quick gestures, building towards longer 20 minute studies. This 4 hour workshop 
includes a full hour of demonstrations, two hours for artists to paint from live model, 
one-on-one instruction, and a group critique. 

Cost: $95 (includes Yupo paper, palette and model fee)
Class Size: Max. 10 students.

Materials Required::
Oil paint (minimum colors black and white, more to experiment), Gamsol, 
refined linseed oil (or medium of choice), assortment of brushes (flats to round details),  
masking tape, and paper towels. Drawing boards & easels available at Hipbone.
*Materials fee covers Yupo paper & palette.

Acrylic Painting Alla Prima

​Alla prima (or in Italian "at first attempt") is the painting process of working wet into wet. Although typically executed with oil paints, a looser and immediate style can be achieved with acrylic paints as well. In this 4 week course, artists will be taught the fundamentals of acrylic alla prima painting from a live model focusing on gesture, anatomy, color, and light and more advanced techniques such as glazing in light and color, and transparencies using acrylic mediums.

Materials

  • Butchers Tray, 7x11" 
  • Stay Wet Palette, 8.5x7 
  • Tracing Paper Pad, 8x11.5 
  • Assorted brushes for water media or acrylic. Synthetic or otherwise is fine, avoid hog bristle brushes. Try to purchase at least twelve brushes in various sizes, including small rounds for detail and large flats for covering ground quickly.  Example: 2, 4, 6, 8 round. 8, 12, flat. 10, filbert. A set like this works perfectly fine: Brushes
  • Acrylic Paint: Titanium white, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium red medium, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, phthalo green, mars black. If you'd like to add a few additional (but not required) colors I'd recommend: Cadmium orange medium, a light yellow (think lemon yellow), quinacridone violet, and hookers green. Windsor Newton, Blick brand, Golden and Sennelier are all fantastic brands. Liquitex is another good and affordable brand, but I'd purchase the artist grade series specifically.  
  • 4 canvases, sizes 11x14" - 16x20" are acceptable, I'd recommend not getting any larger or smaller than this. Canvases at this size can be purchased in bulk. In a pinch a canvas paper pad can work as well. I'd recommend staying away from canvas panels. 
  • Roll of paper towels
  • Jar or cup for water.
  • Pencil and eraser. 
  • Optional Supplies: Gesso and sandpaper: to spice up regular canvases. Adding a layer of gesso, and then gently sanding the surface will greatly improve the quality of your canvas and how the paint adheres to it.
