Seeing the Figure:

Beginning Figure Drawing

Course length: 6 weeks, once a week for 2.5 hrs
Day/Time: Fridays 10am-12:30pm
Sept 16-Oct 21st, 2022.
Skill levels: All levels, but specifically
appropriate for absolute beginners.
Minimum enrollment: 10 students
Tuition: $325 for series (includes model fees)

Seeing the Figure is a class designed for anyone who has a strong desire to try figure drawing, but may feel intimidated and not know where to start. For students with more experience, there will be a lot of emphasis on practice and plenty of time spent drawing. Exploratory gesture work will be the main focus for at least half of the class. For all students, there will be discussions of various approaches to figure drawing and a few slide shows featuring historical and contemporary figurative work.
Course Objectives:

To have a positive and active engagement with the process of SEEING the figure and
producing evidence thereof. Very little emphasis will be placed on producing “good drawings,” rather, we will seek to produce and develop our eye/hand response system as it relates to what is in front of us.
Students will get to experience a wide variety of mediums and be exposed to a range of styles of expressive figuration and drawing itself. Individualized instruction will be provided as much as possible.
Hopefully convert new artists to the more intangible benefits of the process of figure drawing and dissolve any feelings of intimidation that new artists might have about coming to Hipbone for a drop in session
About the instructor: Bonnie Paisley has a BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Portland State University.
